Rangoli: Art that Binds

As the UK and India celebrate 70 years of Indian Independence, we explore the stories of the women who create Rangoli and share them with people all over the world. We bring a taste of India to Wales and share animation styles and techniques, as well as Welsh culture with India in return.

Travelling to Delhi and Rajasthan our team explore the roots of Rangoli, meeting the women who create it. We delve into its history with the help of artist Rajni Kiran Jha and our project partners at Jawahar Kala Kendra, Jaipur and the India Habitat Centre, Delhi.

Smt. Kiran Jha to Wales, led Rangoli workshops at the project launch in Ceredigion at Small World Theatre in August 2017, celebrating the 70th anniversary of India’s independence.

Between August 2017 and March 2018, through interactive workshops and hands-on art sessions, girls and women in Wales explore this intimate, historical art from India. In October 2017 the Winding Snake team travelled to India with our mobile animation studio delivering workshops with students in both India and Wales and teaching animation and digital media skills.

Finally, we will use the experiences we have had on our journey to create Rangoli-inspired short animated films, scored by a selection of musicians from Wales and India.
