Iron Men of Merthyr

Iron Men of Merthyr is a documentary celebrating the boxing heritage of Merthyr Tydfil, featuring boxing heroes Howard Winstone, Eddie Thomas, Johnny Owen, and Jimmy Wilde. During the industrial revolution Merthyr Tydfil, in the South Wales Valleys, saw its community thrive around flourishing Iron, Steel and Coal industries. From this harsh and dramatic working environment many legendary boxers were born. This documentary explores the communities behind some of the boxers and introduces Merthyr’s younger generation to an important part of their local history. The project was funded by the Film Agency for Wales and the Heritage Lottery Fund.
